Why you should care about biodegradable glitter - Projekt Glitter

Why you should care about biodegradable glitter

Glitter is a passion we hold dear to our hearts. However, microbeads and microplastics - the tiny bits of plastic that make up some face washes, body scrubs, and glitter, are detrimental to our environment.

Thankfully there is an alternative to traditional glitter.

Here are the 5 main differences between conventional and biodegradable glitter, and why you should care:

1. TRADITIONAL GLITTER IS HAZARDOUS TO OUR ENVIRONMENT

Traditional glitter is made up of microplastics that cannot be recycled, and its tiny composition makes utilizing it for upcycling out of the question. Essentially, once glitter is disposed of, it lingers on the Earth we call home and can lead to devastating consequences to the environment and natural life.

2. MOST GLITTER ENDS UP IN OUR OCEANS – AND BACK INTO OUR BODIES

Do you wash your glitter off in the shower or sink? Think again. Once disposed of, traditional glitter spreads through our natural environment (often through water filtration systems), and end up in our oceans. Traditional glitter does not break down, but are instead consumed by our friends under the sea. This affects not only our aquatic ecosystem but also ourselves; fish that are caught for human consumption are increasingly beginning to contain plastic particles, which in turn are consumed by us.

3. MANY ESTABLISHMENTS HAVE ALREADY BANNED TRADITIONAL GLITTER

Traditional glitter has already been banned in daycares across the UK, and at many music festivals including Burning Man (among others) for its direct harm on the environment. Global sentiment is shifting towards more sustainable standards for cosmetic products, and major institutions and events are following suit.

4. PROJEKT GLITTER’S BIODEGRADABLE GLITTER IS A SAFE AND SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE THAT MAKES EVERYONE HAPPY

Our glitter is produced from plant cellulose that is compostable even at home. The glitter is derived from sustainable sources, does not contain genetically modified materials and can be metabolised by microorganisms, meaning you can wash your glitter off in the sink guilt-free!

In short: Projekt Glitter is now more committed than ever to being good for the body, soul, and planet!

5. MOST GLITTERS ON THE MARKET ARE NOT FDA/EU APPROVED – OURS IS

Nearly every traditional cosmetic glitter on the market contains the ingredient Phenolic Epoxy Resin. This element is known for causing irritation and rashes and is a skin sensitizer. Glitter has been a grey area when it comes to cosmetic regulations, and as such has managed to go under the radar.

Our glitter meets both FDA and European Commission Cosmetics Regulations. These institutions heavily vet the products they consider acceptable approval, so you can feel confident that you’re making a safe choice when purchasing our glitters.

Our loyal customers have always been trendsetters and leaders in their own right. That’s why we knew when it came to the environment, we had to take personal responsibility and be the change we hope to see in the entire glitter market one day.

Without compromising our quality and our core philosophy, we felt confident our fans would follow us on our new journey to sustainable glitter fashion. So far, your loyalty has proved us right, and we couldn’t be more thankful.

So here’s to bringing joy and light into the world, responsibly and consciously, together.

With Sparkly Affection,

Projekt Glitter
